My top eleven favorite movies are (in no particular order)
1. "Terms of Endearment" by James L. Brooks
This one features Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, and Jack Nicholson. The movie was released in 1983 and was the number one in the US throughout most of the 80s. It won 5 Oscars and 25 other awards. It is also one of the few movies to be worthy of all of the awards that it has won: the focus on the characters combined with superb acting really tears down the emotional fourth wall. The storyline itself is also very well written, ending on a note that most of us wish would never happen but manages to pull if off with such emotional strength that you can't help but break into tears regardless of how many times you watch it. It really is brilliant, and I strongly recommend it.
2. "Back to the Future" Trilogy by Robert Zemeckis
Starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. I. FREAKING. LOVE. THIS. MOVIE. It's epic, the story line is absolutely brilliant, the actors are spectacular, and I can't help but feel giddy whenever the TV guide says its going to be appearing on my network! THE DOCTOR IS AWESOME! CAN I ADOPT HIM?!?
3. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" by Tim Burton
Featuring Chris Sarandon as Jack, Danny Elfman as his singing voice, and Catherine O'Hara as Sally. Those of you who have seen this movie wholeheartedly agree that it should belong on the list. I honestly believe that this movie is Tim Burton's greatest work. I feel as though can make such a claim because, unlike most who argue the same argument, I have seen every single movie that this genius has produced ("Mars Attack!" makes me lol). I've even seen his bad movies like "Planet of the Apes", "Cabin Boy", and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I'm not saying that people who say that TNBC is Burton's best work CAN'T say that TNBC is Burton's best work, I'm just saying that having seen every single one of Burton's movies I guess I have more of an opinion on Burton's work as a whole and as such I am able to compare TNBC to other TB works more effectively... Dang. I feel like an ass saying that-so let's move on!
You gotta love this wonderful holiday movie... which holiday you actually watch this movie on is somewhat debatable, but all the better the excuse to watch it both on Halloween AND on Christmas (if you celebrate either)!! The songs are ever lasting, the characters are brilliant, the plot is original, the story itself is very creative, and the fact that it's a Burton movie just puts the icing on the cake. Touchstone was very lucky to be the distributor of such an outstanding Christmas/Halloween feature.
4. "Up" by Pete Doctor
Voice starring Edward Asner, Jordan Nagai, Bob Peterson, and Christopher Plummer. Great plot, great acting, excellent character development and voice actor-to-character matches. You can't go wrong with Pixar.
5. "Partly Cloudy" by Peter Shon
Well... it's not really a MOVIE, but it's one of my favorite Pixar clips. It's short, it's sweet, it's unique. It, like "Terms of Endearment" somehow manages to break the fourth wall and, no matter how ridiculous it is, somehow really jerks at your tear-ducts and your pull at your smile muscles =]
6. "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" by Robert Stevenson
Featuring Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson. I adore this movie, it's one of my childhood favorites! In fact, my favorite Disney song is in this movie: "Portobello Road", sung by Tomlinson (aka Mr. Brown)... Portobello Road, Portobello Road! / Street where the riches of ancients are stowed / Anything and everything a chap can unload / is sold off the barrow in Portobello Road ~~
I wish my bed could whisk me away to wherever I please. All I'd have to do is turn the bottom bedknob to the left and tap it three times
7. "Million Dollar Baby" by Clint Eastwood
Starring Clint Eastwood (as expected), Hilary Swank, and Morgan Freeman. Wow... just wow. Great story, great acting, very emotional. An amazing movie. What I really like about this one is that it's the first time I've ever seen Clint Eastwood stop being the Clint Eastwood character at some point in the film: Clint Eastwood is a hardened man with a tragic past who always comes to resolve the issue at hand, but near the end you FINALLY see a crack in the Eastwood facade; he's no longer just another hardened character, but a gentle and humane individual who will do something for someone else even though it breaks his heart... since when does a Clint Eastwood character have a heart to break?!
8. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Michael Douglas
Starring the character-perfectionist and thespian that he his, Jack Nicholson. Do I really need to describe this movie? It's absolutely amazing, Jack Nicholson really knows how to get into the character he is playing and pull it off with a bang! I have to say that Billy's suicide is one of my saddest movie moments, I first watched this when I was a kid so I didn't understand what was going on aside from the fact that this poor stuttering man was dead and that he did it himself... poor guy. Chief is awesome.
9. "Star Wars" by George Lucas
Worship the immortal George Lucas. That is all.
10. "Forrest Gump" by Robert Zemeckis
Starring Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise (CSI:NY GUY!). I'm not a huge fan of Tom Hanks, but I absolutely adore this movie. Drugs, emotional strain, endurance, believing in what you can do and what successes you can earn if you really try. I believe that this is one movie that should be passed down through generations, because it simply but effectively explains how important morals and believing in one's self are to achieving what you want in life.
11. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones
Starring the Python crew of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, and Terry Jones. How can you NOT love this parody? Idiocy, swords, kings, castles, French soldiers, the knights of Ni- must I continue? How can you not love this movie?!
So there you have it, my top eleven favorite movies. I highly recommend #'s 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11 if you haven't seen them. I recommend that you see them all, but the numbers listed above are truly wonderful and should be seen at least ONCE in your life time.
That's it! Now go watch Monty Python.
